How To Play Online Roulette

roulette

Among the many popular games offered by online casinos is online roulette. The game is played by thousands around the world, each looking to second guess the wheel and come away with big wins.

If you are new to the game of online roulette, perhaps you have seen it in the movies and want to give it a go yourself, here is EagleBet‘s guide on how to play the game.

Origins of Roulette

Roulette was believed to have been devised in France in the 18th century, it dating back to as early as 1796. The game gradually grew bigger but it wasn’t until the casino towns such as Monte Carlo and Las Vegas was created, and the multiple casinos within them, that the game grew in popularity to something resembling what it is now.

Rules of Online Roulette

Before you get going on a game of roulette it is important to know the rules of the game. Luckily, the rules are pretty simple. Essentially, you guess where a tiny white ball will land in a wheel that has 37 or 38 numbered compartments.

You are given a selected period of time to place your wager, which tends to correlate with when the ball is spun around the wheel. When you are out of time, you will be informed that there are to be no more bets. You then wait and see if the ball lands where you want it to.

Different Versions of Online Roulette

The other thing to note before you embark on playing roulette is that there is more than one version of the game. The most popular version of the game is the European style of roulette. The other version is American Roulette and there is a subtle difference between the two that is important to know.

European Roulette is the game where there is just one zero, making the 37 numbers on the wheel and betting table. American Roulette has a zero but it also has a double zero, giving you the option of an extra betting opportunity throughout the game. We will come to that later in the next section.

Evolution Gaming dominates with the most roulette games to offer.

Online Roulette Bet Types

There are a huge number of different bet types that make up the game of roulette. Here is a brief guide to all of them and what you could win on each bet.

Online Roulette Inside Bets

These are bets that you would place on what is considered to be the inside of the betting table, the part of the table where the individual numbers are situated.

Single: This is where you are playing a whole chip on one number, for example, 23. If the ball lands in 23 you will win 35 times your stake. If it hits any of the other numbers your bet is a losing one.

Split: You have the chance to hedge your bets slightly by placing your chip in the dividing line between two numbers, referred to in casino parlance as a split. An example of this is if you wanted to bet on 7 and 8 you could do so. If one of those numbers is where the ball lands you win 17:1.

Street: This is a similar bet to the split except rather than covering two numbers you are staking on three numbers. Place your chip at the side of a row, for example, 34, 35 and 36 and if one of these numbers wins you get paid out at 11:1.

Corner: If you place your chip in the central corner between four numbers then you are betting on a corner bet. This could be for example 23, 24, 26 and 27 and was one of these numbers to come in you would receive 8:1.

Five-number bet: This is the bet mentioned above which can only be played on the American roulette game. This is a single chip covering 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 and will pay 6:1. This isn’t a popular bet.

Double Street: Exactly the same as the street except you are covering two rows and therefore six numbers. You could have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 covered with this bet and if it wins the pay-out is 5:1.

Online Roulette Outside Bets

These are the bets around the outside of the playing table, not necessarily defined as solitary numbers. Here you are betting on much larger groups, in theory giving you a better chance to win.

Red or Black: The most popular outside bet is the red or black option. This is exactly what it says on the tin. You are betting whether the ball lands on a red number or a black one and if you are correct you get paid at even money.

Odd or Even: This is another outside bet which is relatively popular and rather than betting on whether the winning number is red or black, you are instead betting on odd or even. Winning bets are paid out at even money.

High or Low: You can also bet on whether the ball lands on a number between 1-18 or 19-36 and again this rewards at odds of even money if it wins.

Dozens: In between the furthest row of outside bets and the inside of the table are boxes for three individual dozens – 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36. Betting on this requires the ball to land within that range and pays 2:1.

Columns: At the furthest right of the betting table there are three column boxes. You can bet on whether the ball lands in the first, second or third column and again this pays at 2:1.

Placing A Bet On Online Roulette

When you are playing online roulette you place your bet with a click of the mouse, or your finger if you are on a mobile device. Before you place the wager, first you must select the size of the chip you are investing. These usually range from 0.10 up to 100.

Once you have chosen the chip size, click on the area of the table you want to place your bet on. If you are placing bets on corners or double streets be extra careful with your accuracy, especially if the time to bet is running out! Then sit back and see if the spin is lucky for you!
