French LNH

French Ligue Nationale de Handball betting guide

French Ligue Nationale de Handball Betting Tips

The first division of the Ligue Nationale de Handbal (LNH division 1) is the top league of French handball, and consists of 14 teams. Also known as the lidlstarligue for sponsorship purposes, it began in 1952 as the nationale 1A before moving to its current format, as division 1, in 1985.

As of 2020, it is the top handball division in Europe, according to the European Handball Federation, ahead of the German Bundesliga and the Spanish Liga ASCOBAL. Its quality and intensity make it one of the best handball leagues for online betting, whilst the odds offered are some of the best on the market.

The league season runs from September to May, and each team plays each other twice, once home and once away, in a traditional double-round-robin format. The top two teams qualify for the group stage of the EHF Champions League, the premier European tournament for Handball, which results in an intensely competitive league

LNH Historic Success

Montpellier Handball (MAH) are traditionally the most successful first division side. Since their foundation in 1982, they have won the LNH a record fourteen times, most recently in the 2011-12 season. They can also boast 23 domestic cup honours, as well as being the only side in French Handball history to have won the prestigious EHF Champions League, winning the trophy in the 2002/03 season as well as the 2017/18 season. With such pedigree, LNH betting is often centred around Montpellier Handball club, who are found at short odds to do well.

Top Teams To Watch

In more recent LNH history, Paris Saint Germain have begun to erode Montpellier’s prestigious status. Founded in 1941, they are the sister club of the football team of the same name, and thus share very similar kits and are a favourite of fans new to the sport of handball, as well as with the bookies, who tend to offer them at very short odds due to their recent dominance.

The club have experienced great success, racking up seven LNH Division 1 titles, as well as eleven domestic cups. Their first league success came in the 2012-13 season, when they beat reigning champions Montpellier by seven points. This sparked a period of dominance for the side from the French capital, who have won every title but one since, and were well on their way to winning the 2019-20 competition, having yet to lose in the eighteen games they had played, and drawing just once.

Other teams to have experienced success in the French first division include Union Sportif De Ivry, who have won the competition on eight occasions. Nimes are also another top performer, lifting the trophy on three occasions, and sat third in the 2019/20 standings. Most recently, Union Sportif Dunkerque were the last side to break PSG’s stranglehold on the competition, triumphing against the odds in the 2013-14 season, and reminding fans of the value of betting on the LNH.
