Czech Extraliga Betting Tips
The Extraliga is the highest level of ice-hockey in Czech Republic. It is also known as the fifth-best hockey league in the world and it was founded in 1993 after a break-up from the Czechoslovakian First Division Ice-Hockey league. The league usually goes by the name ELH because of the English name’s translation in Czech.
Considering how long the league has been in the picture, there is immense potential on Extraliga betting rewards and EagleBet has a list of the best and trusted sportsbooks who offer some great odds to choose from in the betting for the Extraliga.
Extraliga Format And Structure
The league’s format changed from the 2006/07 onwards, as a regulation win became worth three points, an overtime win was worth two points and a team that lost in over-time got a single point. The team that lost in normal time got no points. Since then, the same format has been followed in the ExtraLiga, allowing for greater consistency in odds and a higher number of betting opportunities.
A total of 14 teams compete in the league. Unlike the Austrian ice-hockey league, all of them are from Czech Republic itself even though Czech teams do take part in the EBL in Austria. But the format in the ExtraLiga is quite the same, as the teams play against each other twice- once at home and once away from home. This leads to a higher efficiency and certainty for betting odds.
Once all the teams have played each other twice, the top ten in the table qualifies for the next round. The top-six teams get a direct advantage as they advance directly into the best of seven play-off format for later on. The other four teams take part in best of five games to qualify for the quarter-finals and join the top six.
The bottom four teams of the original league play in a mini-tournament and take part in a total of 12 games each. The teams that finish in the bottom two play against the top two of the second-division to determine which team stays in the Extraliga and who gets relegated.
This interesting and long-drawn format makes the Extraliga a very intriguing league for betters across the world. The unique way of conducting sees the league start in September and it ends in April of the next year.
Top Teams In The Extraliga
Kometa Brno have won the Extraliga title the most number of times in history- 13 times, despite the league having started in 1993 only. But the most recent title was won by Ocelari Trinec, who won their second-ever Extraliga title in the 2018-19 campaign.
The 2018-19 Extraliga season had seen Trinec finish second in the table originally, while Tygri Liberec had finished top. Eventually, both teams had gone on to meet each other in the final as Trinec won the play-off by a 4-2 margin. Liberec had faced Brno in the semi-final, but they beat the record title-holders by a 4-2 scoreline in the best of seven play-offs.
Before the league 2019-20 season stopped in March, but that had seen Liberec stay at the top of the table. Like the previous season, Trinec were at the second spot, nine points behind their title-rivals.
