Ice Hockey U20 World Championship Betting Tips

The World Championship hockey tournament for U20s takes place every winter and uncovers the odds-on stars of tomorrow. Teams are made up of players who turn 20 years old in the year of the tournament, hence the World Championship is for U20s. It is informally known as the World Juniors.

Ice Hockey U20 World Championship History

Officially the tournament began in 1977, though there were three iterations before that. The Soviet Union won all four between 1977 and 1980 (the odds must have been very low) while Canada triumphed every year from 1990 to 1997. In two of those years, 1991 and 1995, they were World Championship U20 hosts, so betting on them was prudent, especially as Canada is a nation of ice hockey players.

In 1987 the infamous Punch-up in Piestany led to the ejection of the fighting nations: Canada and what was then the Soviet Union. A mass brawl lasted 20 minutes and the game was annulled. Finland took advantage of both nations being ejected, which upset the odds.

The star nations over the course of the tournament’s history are those two, with Canada winning 18 times and finishing as losing finalists nine times. Russia, either under their new name or as the Soviet Union or the Commonwealth of Independent States, have won 13 finals and lost 13 too. Finland have won five tournaments, the USA four, and Sweden and the Czech Republic (losing five finals as Czechoslovakia) two each.

Ice Hokey U20 World Championship Format And Key Teams

Ten teams take part in the finals in two groups, and the top eight groups advance to a play-off. In 2020, Group A was won by Sweden while Group B saw Canada win six of their seven games. Big-scoring games in the tournament included Canada 6-5 USA, Germany 3-6 USA and, amazingly given what would later happen, Russia 6-0 Canada.
Canada would take revenge by beating the European side 4-3.

ussia also put six goals past Germany, who overcame Kazakhstan in a best-of-three relegation play-off. The Asian side dropped out of the Top Division to Division I; Austria took their place after they beat the likes of Latvia, Belarus and Norway to the Division I title. Hungary are promoted to that division, with Slovenia relegated, so start betting on the Mighty Magyars.

Betting on Finland may work too. They have been successful in the 2010s, winning in 2014, 2016 and 2019. Their Scandinavian friends Sweden, who had won the tournament in 1981, reached three consecutive finals between 2012 (when they won their second World Championship for U20s) and 2014. In 2020 Sweden beat Finland in the Bronze medal match, so it may be wise to put some money on them, if you do not trust the big two, when you place your bets.

Ice Hockey U20 Top Players In The Tournament

The top scorer in the 2020 tournament was a Swede, Samuel Fagemo, who scored eight goals and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings. His teammates Nils Hoeglander (5 goals, 6 assists) and Rasmus Sandin (3 goals, 7 assists) were also high up in the scoring charts.

They are respectively with the Vancouver Canucks and the Toronto Maple Leafs, which just goes to show how important the World Championships are to U20s as they look to become young professionals in the NHL or another top hockey league.
