Ontario Hockey League Betting Tips

Canada’s OHL is the Ontario Hockey League, where ice hockey is a national sport. EagleBet allows fans of the sport to enjoy the best betting tips today for the league. The 2020/21 season is due to begin in September.

Canada OHL History

In a thrill for all fans, it is the first chance to see the next generation of talent, since teams in the OHL are made up of high school or college kids under the age of 21. In 2020, Canada’s OHL celebrates its ruby anniversary; it was founded in 1980, and only nine founding members are still active. These include Kitchener Rangers, Ottawa 67s and Windsor Spitfires.

OHL Format and Structure

There are 20 franchises which compete in Eastern and Western Divisions in a 68-league regular season which runs from September to March. This is followed by a 16-team play-off, which climaxes in the final. The J Ross Robertson Cup is awarded to the winner, who then advances to the national Memorial Cup against the winners of three other leagues. Windsor Spitfires took the Memorial Cup in 2009, 2010 and 2017, with Oshawa Generals winning in 2015 and London Knights the following year.

Canada’s three OHL franchises are based in the USA, just over the Canadian border: two are in Michigan, while the other is in Pennsylvania. Betting on them may be prudent. Understandably the Hamilton Bulldogs pull the biggest crowds since their arena can seat 17,000 people.

The London Kings play at the Budweiser Gardens, which holds 9,000, while Ottawa’s TD Place Arena allows up to 10,000 67s fans to cheer their team. Such big crowds can lower the odds of a victory, or may make betting more difficult.

Ontario Hockey League Key Players

The top players in the 2019/20 season by points were Marco Rossi of the Ottawa 67s, who has 39 goals and 81 assists. Behind him were Cole Perfetti of Saginaw Spirit (37 goals, 74 assists) and Connor McMichael of London Knights (47 goals, 55 assists).

In Brett Brochu, the Knights also had the league’s best goaltender according to statistics. It therefore stands to reason that the 67s finished top of the Eastern Conference and the Knights were top of the West. In spite of the 2020 Draft, these are the odds-on teams to place your bets on.

Nick Robertson, with 55 goals, was the most prolific player in the 2019/20 Canada’s OHL season, while Peterborough Petes had two of the top assist-makers in their roster: Semyon Der-Arguchintsev (63) and Akil Thomas (60). If betting on the most time in the sin bin is something you are interested in, the likes of Daylon Groulx (Ottawa 67s), Narvin Mutter (Hamilton Bulldogs) and Dawson Baker (Kingston Frontenacs) all sat on the sidelines for at least 100 penalty minutes during the season. Having such a player in your team may raise the odds of victory.

Canada’s OHL Betting & Odds

There is a raft of trophies awarded for regular-season performance in Canada’s OHL, including the William Hanley Trophy for sportsmanship, the Dave Pinkney Trophy for defensive excellence and the MVP award named in honour of Red Tilson.

Currently the Finnish goaltender with the fine name, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, holds that honour thanks to his performance with the Sudbury Wolves. Luukkonen currently plays in the AHL for Rochester Americans and won the gold medal with Finland at the World Junior Championships.
