Brazilian Volleyball Superliga Betting Tips
Brazil’s Superliga is the volleyball tournament for men who are very good at serving, setting and spiking. Betting on it is extremely exciting. Brazilians can play indoor and outdoor (beach) volleyball and, since it became an Olympic sport in 1964, have been one of the leading teams.
In fact, they have competed in the last four men’s volleyball finals, winning in 2004 and 2016 and losing in 2008 (to the USA) and in 2012 (to Russia). They are odds-on to win at the next Olympics in Tokyo, so betting on them is prudent.
Brazil Superliga Format And Top Teams
There are 12 teams in Brazil’s Superliga, full of talented men. Minas were one of the top teams at the turn of the century, winning four titles between 1999/2000 and 2006/07. Florianopolis then took over as the team to beat, winning four in five seasons. In the 2010s Sada Cruzeiro won six Superliga championships and became the men to beat. They have also won six of the last seven South American Championships and, in 2015 and 2016, were crowned the best team in the world at the Club World Championship. It would be prudent to study the betting odds when they play.
Teams To Watch
Sada Cruzeiro
The team’s captain is veteran Filipe Ferraz, who has won eight Superliga titles with three different sides, playing as an outside hitter. Playing in the same position is John ‘Gord’ Perrin, a Canadian international who has played volleyball in Turkey, Italy, Poland, China and Russia.
The team’s setter is Fernando Kreling, a Brazilian international, while their spiker is Evandro Guerra, a gold medallist at the 2016 Olympics in front of a Brazilian crowd in Rio de Janeiro. It pays to have experience in your team – Guerra is 38 years old – so have a scan of the roster of each Superliga Men’s team before placing your online bets.
SEDI São Paulo
SESI São Paulo are the unlucky losers of recent years, having lost four finals, though they did triumph in 2010/11 for the first and only time, in their second season in existence. Their captain is William Arjona, the setter, who was another gold-medal winner at the 2016 Olympics and was part of Sada Cruzeiro’s dream team before joining São Paulo in 2017.
Eder Carbonera is the 36-year-old middle blocker who joined a year later, having spent his international career sharing a locker room with Arjona. In addition, Murilo Endres is the 39-year-old libero who helped Brazil reach three World Championship finals, winning in 2006 and 2010. He was the Most Valuable Player at the 2012 Olympics, while Sergio Santos – recently at Corinthians – won the award in 2016.
Superliga 2020 Edition
Unfortunately Brazil’s Superliga for men season was cancelled in 2019/20, with Funvic Taubate unable to defend their title and all betting suspended. Like SESI, they are based in São Paulo; like SESI, they are a relatively new team which was founded in 2010.
Their senior players include captain and setter Raphael Oliveria, who is 40 years old. Opposite spiker Leandro Vissotto Neves and middle blocker Lucas Saatkamp won a silver medal with Brazil in London; Saatkamp went one better as part of the 2016 team. The odds favour experienced teams.
